Hurricane Irma: Fort Myers Updates

Hurricane Irma is impacting the local area slowly but surely. Below are a few updates on road closures, business closures, and more info on hurricane preparations.

Fire Department:

As of Thursday morning, the City of Fort Myers has five locations for Fort Myers residents to obtain free self-service sand. Sand is currently available at:

Shady Oaks Park - 3300 Marion St. (Marion St. at Terry Ave., southwest of Terry Park)
Alliance for the Arts - 10091 McGregor Blvd. (Between Colonial Blvd. and Royal Palm Square Blvd.) 

Fire Department Training Facility - 4540 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. (Between Arcadia Street and Ortiz Ave.).  The fire training facility is open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. 
Atlantic Coast Line train station/Fire Station No. 1 - 2300 Peck St. (Near the Intersection of Central Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.).

Fire Station No. 5. - 9700 Treeline Ave. (Approximately 0.15 miles south of Pelican Preserve Blvd.)

At all locations, citizens are asked to provide their own bags and a shovel.

Businesses:

From Alliance for the Arts:

"Like our southwest Florida friends, the Alliance for the Arts continues to diligently monitor the path of Hurricane Irma. We are preparing for possible severe weather conditions, currently anticipated to begin late Friday and to remain in effect throughout this weekend.

In preparation for Irma, we have decided to close the Alliance offices Friday, Sept 8th through Monday, Sept 11th. All programming including SoCo Second Saturday, the GreenMarket, youth theatre rehearsals, classes and the Fired Up exhibit will be postponed or canceled. We will update you as soon as we know more."

Edison & Ford Winter Estates:

"In preparation for Hurricane Irma, Edison Ford will be closed September 7 - 11. The homes and other buildings have been prepared for the potential storm threat. 

Visitors should call 239-334-7419 and speak with a staff person prior to planning their visit."


From Bell Tower Shops:

"The BTS management team continues to monitor the progress of Hurricane Irma. The center will most likely be closed from Friday 9/8 thru Sunday 9/10. The exact closure date and time will be confirmed tomorrow once the hurricane path of travel is better identified."


From Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce:

"Due to Hurricane Irma the September WIB event today at IBERIABANK has been rescheduled to Wednesday, November 1st."


From World of Beer Bell Tower:

"We are open today! Drink good beer and stay safe out there!"


From the North Fort Myers Library:

"The planned move of the North Fort Myers Library to its temporary location has been rescheduled from Sept. 9, 10 and 11 to Sept. 23, 24 and 25 due to the approach of Hurricane Irma and the uncertainty of its path." Learn more here.
