A Jan. 21 call to action to the community on Facebook generated big results for the Gulf Coast Humane Society - 2010 Arcadia St, Fort Myers.

"GCHS has taken in a bevy of puppies and kittens over the course of the last few weeks and many have gone into foster as they mature to being fixed and being put up for adoption," the post said. "We are basically out of kitten and puppy CANNED food, which is a vital component in their diet. Please consider a donation of canned puppy or kitten food."

In the days and weeks that followed, the community at large delivered via both monetary donations and drop-off orders from Amazon, Chewy, and other online services. Local businesses even chipped in, such as the Mellow Mushroom and Scoop Me Up Ice Cream. Additionally, The Beta Club of Immokalee High School delivered donations.

"GCHS asked...and the community RESPONDED!!" a follow-up post said on Jan. 25. "With the heavy influx of puppies and kittens, the foster program and intake was running severely low on puppy and kitten canned food. The plea was made and YOU made it happen with a HUGE delivery from Amazon today! We thank all who have donated, the puppies and kittens are very well taken care of!!"

On Jan. 26, the humane society posted about a young girl named Sophie, who donated $75.25—her earnings from working a farm stand, selling handmade Christmas ornaments. On Feb. 5, the humane society followed up to post that local children Khloe and Ava held a bracelet and necklace sale to benefit the GCHS and raised $25 for the shelter animals. Their mother matched the donation, as well.

Finally, on Feb. 15, Treeline Elementary School wrapped up its donation drive for GCHS culminating in a van full of donations being delivered to the shelter for its animals. Christopher and Wyatt, students of Treeline, and assistant principal Scott Cook were instrumental in collecting the donations, along with a host of other students and teachers at the school.

"We thank all who are helping feed our puppies and kittens!!" the humane society followed up on its original post. "The GCHS Community is so very gracious!!"
